1. Tibetan prayer flags traditionally come in one style only. They come together on a string and can be hung across the ceiling or on the wall, or even outside between two poles. Hanging prayer flags outside is very common in both Tibet and Nepal. Prayer flags have prayers written on the front, back or both sides- and it is popular to hang prayer flags outside because when the wind blows the prayer flags then the prayers are blown out into the wind and around the world to those who need them. The Tibetan New Year is known as Losar. It is common in Tibet and Nepal to change your prayer flags each year during Losar. Vertical prayer flags are a different type of a prayer flag than traditional Tibetan prayer flags. However, vertical prayer flags can still be hung outside, and you can hang a vertical prayer flag on a flag pole or on a pole on your front porch, etc. The prayer flags in our vertical prayer flags section have a mantra on them, and many of the flags also have an image of a Buddha on the front. Vertical prayer flags are a newer form of prayer flags, and our vertical flags are all made from a satin material. This is great for hanging the prayer flags outside because they will hold up for longer in the wind. Of course, prayer flags really only should last for about a year, because you will change them the following Losar, if you want to follow that particular tradition.

    The wind horse is also called Lungta in Tibetan. The wind horse is a very important symbol in Tibetan Buddhism and in Tibet. The wind horse symbol was not originally an important figure in Buddhism, it was a part of the religion of the people, more of a folkloric figure than anything. But over time, the wind horse symbol became more important in Tibetan Buddhism, and today it is an iconic symbol. The wind horse symbol traditionally stands for good luck or good fortune. This flag is 38 inches long and 29 inches wide.

    This White Vertical Prayer Flag is made from satin material. It is very large, 50 inches long and 27 inches wide. There is a prayer that extends all the way down this prayer flag. There are ties along one side of the prayer flag and there are many images on this prayer flag. One image is the lungta, or wind horse (described above), another image is the eight auspicious symbols. These include the lotus flower, the eternity knot, and the parasol. The eight auspicious synbols are displayed down the middle and the sides of the prayer flag. The Kalachakra mantra symbol is also on this prayer flag. This symbol is known as the ten-fold powerful symbol, and is one of the most important symbols in Tibetan Buddhism.

  2. We listed a few new Buddha statues last week, so I think I will blog about it! We were so happy to get these Buddha statues in stock, because for a long time we only had the gold statues and then the Happy Buddha statues and we didn't have any of these statues made from silver and brass. We now have eleven new Buddha statues.
    Vajrasattva Buddha Statue

    This Buddha statue is made from silver and brass, and it is 6 inches tall. The Vajrasattva Buddha is one of my favorites, perhaps because of the mantra (and you can always use it in a bind) Om Vajrasattva Hum. How easy is that to remember?     Next I have a statue of one of the Wrathful Deities, Mahakala. I always think the Wrathful deities are exciting when we get them in stock because they are pretty unique. Mahakala wears a crown of skulls on his head and is usually shown standing. He is a fierce deity, but Mahakala is fierce to protect us.

    Ganesha, Ganesh- everyone loves Ganesh! Ganesh is the Buddha with the head in the form of an elephant. This Ganesh statue is a five-headed Ganesh statue. The five heads are representative of a number of things. One explanation is that four of the heads can look in the four directions (north, south, east, and west) and the fifth head is free to look inward. There are many mantras devoted to Ganesh, and he is well-loved in India.

  3. Traditionally, when people think of Tibetan prayer flags, they think of small flags hanging in a straight row. We have many sets like that with prayer flags of various sizes, including cotton and satin prayer flags. We have just added over 15 new prayer flags to our site. These flags come in a range of sizes, but they are known as vertical prayer flags, and there is only one 'flag' on each prayer flag. These prayer flags come in a variety of styles, some have a mantra written on the flag, and we also have a wide range of Buddhist deities on each flag, such as the Padmasambhava Buddha and the Green Tara and the White Tara Buddhas. These vertical prayer flags can be hung on the wall like a poster, and they can also be hung on a flag pole. Satin is much more durable than cotton prayer flags, and so if you want to hang the vertical prayer flag outside it will hold up better in the weather than a cotton prayer flag. Of course, it is traditional to change your prayer flags once a year for the Tibetan New Year festival, which is called Losar.

    This prayer flag is made from satin. It is very long, 60 inches long, and it is 26 inches wide. This prayer flag has a strap on the side so it can be hung from a pole. It can also be hung on the wall like a tapestry. This prayer flag has a mantra going all the way down and it was handmade in Nepal.

    The Wind Horse Prayer Flag

    This prayer flag has the image of a wind horse on the front. This prayer flag is made from satin material and it was handmade in Nepal. This prayer flag is 40 inches long and 28 inches wide. Another name for wind horse is lungta.

  6. Although we primarily sell Tibetan jewelry that is made in Nepal, we also have started offering some lovely jade pendants on our website. These pendants can be worn with a hemp or cotton string, or carried as a talisman. These jade pendants come in various shapes and have a number of interesting designs on them. Some of the designs include crosses, Buddhas, stars, yin yang symbols, etc. Jade pendants make excellent and unique gifts as well. As a material, jade means, 'wisdom or knowledge'.

  7. One of our new products at Om Tibetan Jewelry is our leather bracelets. We have these bracelets in a number of styles and designs, and these have been big sellers for us. The nice thing about these bracelets is that they come in a wide variety of designs (more to be posted soon) and they are fully adjustable for every wrist.   8. I just put a few new prayer boxes on Om Tibetan Jewelry. We have a few different ranges in terms of pricing and materials used. Some of our prayer boxes have Buddhas inside, while others are empty and you can put small prayers or mantras inside. Prayer boxes are sometimes called lockets, and in Tibetan Buddhism they are called ghaus (also spelled gau, or gao) Here are some of our new ghaus...

    This prayer box is made from gold. There is a Mahakala Buddha made in turquoise on the front of this prayer box, and there is a Tara Buddha on the inside. This prayer box is totally unique.

    This prayer box has the eternity knot, endless knot symbol on the front. The eternity knot represents the cycle of death and rebirth, and it is one of the eight auspicious symbols in Tibetan Buddhism. This endless knot prayer box is made from sterling silver and gold.

    The next prayer box features a beautifully carved Buddha eyes image on the front. The Buddha eyes symbol is also known as 'wisdom eyes.' The line in-between the Buddha eyes symbol that looks like a question mark is the Nepal symbol for the number 1, which represents the connection between everything. The dot above the 1 is the third eye. The third eye represents the all-seeing eye of Buddha. This Buddha eyes prayer box is made from sterling silver material.
